Chapter Fourteen

Lia checked the time on her phone and blew a strained breath out. 8:00 p.m.

She was already dressed and waiting. For Alex.

Thankfully, her mother hadn’t heard a word of the commotion with him the previous night, so Lia was able to slip in, wash her face, then feign a headache to account for her early return. This evening was tougher to explain. In her mother’s mind, this was the second pseudodate with a handsome stranger.

Lia smoothed down the silky folds of her strapless LBD. As Amber had suggested, she’d spent the afternoon watching reruns of ER, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Grey’s with her mom. Thankfully, it had been one of her mother’s best days yet. Maybe the therapy was going to work after all.

Slipping her feet into her silver gladiator heels, she checked her makeup one last time. She’d gone for a simpler look than the one she wore for her job at the club. She wasn’t sure if he’d still find her attractive without the cake layers of makeup, but to hell with it. She could be slightly vain if she wanted, right? She wasn’t exactly the worst-looking woman. God help her, all the club’s members had done enough to fluff her ego to last a century. Then again, the makeup, wearing next to nothing, and her virgin scent were good enhancers for even the plainest woman.

Walking into the living room, she smiled at her mother’s beaming face.

“You look so beautiful. He must be really something. Will I get to meet him this time?”

Lia shocked herself by smirking. Oddly, the idea of Alex meeting her mom didn’t scare her half as much as she expected it would. But still. No, she thought. “Let’s see where it goes, Mom,” she said. “He’s just a random guy. We’ll talk if there’s another date, promise.” That was a big if.

Her mother rolled her eyes, smiled, and looked back to the screen.

Lia took her usual place alongside her on the well-worn couch, but her gaze went beyond the television, taking in the rest of their antique-laden home. Her childhood home.

Despite all the financial difficulties, and that was putting mildly, Lia couldn’t bring herself to sell it. Her mother’s words on the day of her diagnosis echoed in her mind. This was where she wanted to die. The thought sent ice through her veins, but she brushed it aside. The chemo had to work, it just had to.

“Oh, Lia,” her mother’s voice cut through her thoughts. “Michael called for you. It sounded awfully important. Is something wrong?”

Lia’s heartbeat jerked at the concern stretched across her mother’s voice. Her gaze darted to her iPhone perched on the oak coffee table in front of her. Her mother, of course, had no idea of their financial struggles. As far as she was aware there was enough money and insurance was covering all her medical treatment. Just the thought of losing their home would have worsened her condition. Lia had begged Michael to keep it from her for the sake of her condition.
